You Don’t Suck at Your Job
Hey, for those of you out there that changed jobs recently, who took on a stretch position or new role that looks quite different than where you’ve been before and find yourself questioning your ability, I have a message for you.
I understand it is really uncomfortable, especially the first 3-6 months, maybe even the first year. But, know, please know, YOU DO NOT SUCK AT YOUR JOB.
Your courage and confidence to grow somewhere new has launched you into a new environment that is unlike anywhere you’ve navigated before.
Imagine a swimmer, a kick-ass swimmer who shows up to the pool every day. Swims her laps, beats her times, has impeccable form, power and endurance. She got so good she’s ready for that next challenge.
She decided to take her practice to the open water. It is hard as hell. So many new elements that change daily, that are out of her control. Her form, endurance and confidence are all challenged every day. She feels clumsy and questions her ability.
Does this make her a bad swimmer? Hell no!
She is still a kick-ass swimmer just in a new environment that she has never swam in before so of course it feels uncomfortable, difficult and uncontrollable.
In time that will change, she will master the open water too because regardless of where she is swimming, she has her strong foundations, skills, instincts and resilience to guide her.
And, so do you.
You are in a new environment, of course it will be hard, you will feel clumsy and it may all seem overwhelming. You chose the hard because you were ready. Trust your foundations, your instincts and the your incredible skills that got you here - all of it.
The comfort and confidence will come just keep showing up to the open water.
You are incredibly courageous, confident and powerful for taking on a stretch role.
You are talented and your company is lucky to have you. Don’t forget it.
